Bitterns in Newcastle

A very quick visit to a local wildlife reserve and an opportunity to see Bitterns. This is almost a new bird for me, as I’ve only heard them and seen them flying in the distance in more southerly areas of the country.

However today after a very short walk I was fortunate to see a couple of them flying then desending into the reeds close to where I was, a brief second or so to capture a few images as the bird came in to land.

Luckily I had set the camera up in advance, 1000sec at f6.3 and Auto ISO (1600 was selected in todays poor light) – it pays to be prepared.

I was quite happy for my first pics but I know I’ll be back for more.
